LEED Building Certification

LEED Building Certification

LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a devised system for rating by the USGBC, United States Green Building Council, to determine the performance of a building according to a variety of standards including its indoor environment, building materials, water efficiency and physical location to encourage the efforts for sustainable design development.

It’s based on credits which allows a project to earn points according to their environmental design efforts that are taken while constructing the building from products and materials to energy and waste.
LEED has drastically influenced the efforts in building development to increase the implementation of “green building” practices around the United States. A project must meet the requirements set by the specific established LEED credit that one is pursuing. Aeris provides LEED Certification Credit testing for the air quality assessment.

Some components sampled for are:
  • Particulates
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • TVOCs
  • Formaldehyde
  • Specific targeted volatile organic compounds
It is estimated that 90–95% of our time is now spent indoors. Many studies show that daylighting improves sleep patterns, increases worker productivity, decreases patient recovery times in hospitals, and improves or increases student test scores, retail purchase behavior, alertness, mood, atmosphere, memory, and health. Additionally, daylighting can significantly reduce artificial lighting demand, resulting in a 30–80% lighting energy savings.

Benefits for business owners pursuing LEED certification are directly associated with their employees. It is widely known that better working environments will result in an increase in employee retention along with increased productivity. Aeris recommends all business owners to consider their indoor air quality as a routine assessment for their facilities.

Although LEED is completely a voluntary program, deciding to pursue a LEED Certification for a project or specific component within a project can help your building maintain a very positive image regarding its environment, the community, and the occupants.
